F/R, F/A, 1998, 2295 cm³ petrol, 2155 cm³ diesel (I4 DOHC), 2398, 2597, 2799, 3199 cm³ (V6 OHC), 2874 cm³ diesel (I5 OHC), 2799, 3199 cm³ petrol, 2996 cm³ diesel (I6 DOHC), 4196, 4973, 5956 cm³ (V8 DOHC), 4266, 5439 cm³ (V8 OHC). New-generation E-Klasse, with odd, four-headlamp front, looking less elegant than predecessor. Improved ride and handling, but proved less reliable than W124, with rust problems from 1995 to June 2001 and other issues related to cost-cutting. Very aerodynamic with modest fuel consumption. V6s new to Es—earlier models of this lineage had straight-sixes. No coupé this generation, with buyers expected to go to smaller Mercedes-Benz CLK-Klasse (W208).
