Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (W198). 1954–63 (prod. 3,258). 2-door coupé, 2-door roadster. F/R, 2996 cm³ (I6 OHC). Racing car adapted for the road, primarily US market, in many ways a supercar, with highest speed at the time. Gullwing doors forced upon design by the construction, rather than styling. Credited as first production car with fuel injection. Original had 215 PS from engine, four-wheel independent suspension; roadster had 215 or 225 PS units. Coupé to 1957; roadster from 1957 to 1963.
