Mazda RX-8 (FE/SE3P). 2003–12 (prod. n/a). 4-door coupé. F/R, 1308 cm³ (Wankel 2 × 654 cm³). Styled by Ikuo Maeda, whose father designed the Mazda Savanna RX-7 (1978–85), RX-8 began as part of a “skunk works” programme inside Mazda for the 13B-MSP rotary engine. Small suicide rear doors, conventional boot. Room for four, a requirement due to the Ford involvement. Fifty–fifty weight distribution possible thanks to the compact engine, and to save weight, there was no spare tyre, only a puncture kit. Mid-term changes 2008. Easy and responsive to drive, and a proper and precise sports car, though with the Wankel engine, thirsty.
