1977 Mazda Familia.jpg

Mazda Familia/Mazda MR90/Mazda Baby Boomer/Mazda Vantrend (FA4). 1977–85, 1990–7 (prod. 890,000 approx. Japan only). 3- and 5-door sedan, 3- and 5-door wagon. F/R, 985, 1272, 1415, 1597 cm³ (I4 OHC). Rear-drive hatchback from Mazda, usually exported as 323, but GLC (Great Little Car) in North America. No front-drive, meaning a low development cost, and Mazda judged that it could weather the competition for a while. Styling followed that of the larger Capella around the front. Launched in Japan with 1·3, with 1·4 from 1978; five-door the same year. Square headlamps from 1979. Sedans replaced in 1980, though wagon carried on through to 1985. Revived in Indonesia in 1990 with new Capella GC-style grille and name, MR90, replaced by Baby Boomer with squared-off front end and body-colour C-pillar (as with original Familia) in 1992. Vantrend, station wagon version, launched in Indonesia in 1992 with later grille. Indonesian-made models with 1·4 only, built till 1997.

Manufacturing locations: Hiroshima, Japan; Pretoria, South Africa; Indonesia
