Mazda Familia/Mazda Isamu Genki (BJ). 1998–2009 (prod. n/a). 4- and 5-door sedan. F/F, F/A, 1498 cm³ petrol, 1998 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 1323, 1498, 1598, 1839, 1991 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Last Mazda-developed Familia range, and last to be exported as 323. Same platform as Mazda Capella (GF), to save costs. Known in Taiwan as Isamu Genki. Hatchback called S-Wagon in Japan; in some countries it had 323 Astina badges. Sedan dubbed Protegé in some markets. Very dull styling, especially compared to predecessor. Reliable and well built, with good ride and fuel economy. Twinned one last time with Ford Laser (1998–2003) and later Ford Tierra in Taiwan. Mid-term facelift 2000. Limited-edition Mazdaspeed model in 2001. Japanese production to April 2004.
