Five-door now a coupé with pop-up headlights and thick C-pillar, called Mazda Familia Astina (with Eunos 100 twin). Exported as Mazda 323 as before, though with letters identifying body shape in Europe: 323P for three-door, 323F for five-door and 323S for notchback sedan. Four-door called Protegé or 323 Protegé in some markets, five-door called 323 Astina in Australasia. Platform still donated to Ford Laser (1989–94), with different sheetmetal.
