Mazda Familia/Hainan-Mazda 323 (BG/CA7130/CA7160). 1989–2000 (prod. n/a). 3- and 4-door sedan, 5-door coupé. Mazda, confident of a growing economy rather than the looming recession, split Familia range into three models with no shared sheetmetal, while carrying over station wagon from BF series till 1994. Five-door now a coupé with pop-up headlights and thick C-pillar, called Mazda Familia Astina (with Eunos 100 twin). Exported as Mazda 323 as before, though with letters identifying body shape in Europe: 323P for three-door, 323F for five-door and 323S for notchback sedan. Four-door called Protegé or 323 Protegé in some markets, five-door called 323 Astina in Australasia. Platform still donated to Ford Laser (1989–94), with different sheetmetal. Good handling and economical, but noisy compared to competition. Japanese production to 1996; Chinese production at Hainan-Mazda JV from 1995 to 2000, as four-door sedan only.
