Renamed Mazda Midge in South Africa in 1994–9 as entry-level model and included 1·6- and 2·0-litre units from Capella. Later entry-level Ford Laser and Tonic in South Africa used same sheetmetal as Familia, rather than that of the 1980s’ Laser.
