Mazda Chantez GFII.jpg

Mazda Chantez (KMAA). 1972–6 (prod. n/a). 2-door sedan. F/R, 359 cm³ (I2 2-str.). Kei car follow-up to Carol with attractive styling, and developed with a single-rotor rotary engine in mind, after Carol had been disadvantaged by its lack of power. Technical difficulties and a movement to hinder the adoption of the engine prevented Mazda from using it, and an air-cooled two-stroke from the Porter commercial was installed longitudinally instead. Reasonable performance with 35 PS at 6,500 rpm, and kerb weight of 490 kg. Leaf springs at rear to save costs, rather than independent suspension of R360 and Carol. Long wheelbase at 2,200 mm, the best in class at the time, with wheels pushed out to corners for a more sporting appearance. Practical, with sliding front seats and folding split rear seats. Sluggish sales, hampered by the single body style, and renewed plans to install a rotary came to nought thanks to its high fuel consumption. Very minor changes in 1974 and 1975. Not replaced till the Carol returned under the Autozam marque in the 1980s, though Porter continued.

Manufacturing location: Hiroshima, Japan

Marque: Mazda | Model: Mazda Carol | Predecessor: Mazda Carol (KPDA) | Successor: Autozam Carol (AA5PA)
