Mazda Capella (GD). 1987–94 (prod. n/a). 4- and 5-door sedan, 2-door coupé, 5-door wagon. F/F, F/A, 1598, 1789, 1998, 2184 cm³ petrol, 1998 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 1789, 1998 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Larger but more conservative, fifth-generation Capella was better built and rigid. Improved suspension, ride and refinement. Diesel with innovative pressure wave supercharger, a first. Speed-sensitive four-wheel steering, all the rage in Japan in 1987, available (Mazda was the first with electronic four-wheel steer on the market), while four-wheel drive launched within months of original début. Four-door sedan now with a six-light body, but duller in appearance; five-door fastback and two-door coupé (called MX-6 for export) smarter. Cargo station wagon, with five- and seven-seat options for export, from March 1988, replacing Luce Van. Mid-term changes in 1989, with inclusion of 1·8 DOHC. Sedans and coupé replaced in 1991, but wagon continued. Twinned with Ford Telstar (GD). Exported as Mazda 626.
