Mazda Atenza (GG/GY). 2002–8 (prod. 1,320,000 approx. sold). 4- and 5-door sedan, 5-door wagon. F/F, F/A, 1798, 1999, 2261 cm³ petrol, 1999 cm³ diesel (I4 DOHC), 2967 cm³ (V6 DOHC). Replacement for Capella, known as 6 in export markets, breaks the 1,700 mm width limit by 80 mm, and is modelled after a jet fighter. Mazda-led development with the platform later used by various Fords. Japanese Car of the Year for 2002–3; Car of the Year in China in 2003. Mazda 6 MPS performance model shown at Paris 2004, Mazdaspeed Atenza at Tokyo Show, and released 2005. One million units reached in 2006, making Atenza one of the more successful Mazdas, and a celebratory, limited-edition model released in Japan. Dynamically strong, with good steering and handling, but four-cylinder models had poorer acceleration. Ford Duratec V6 for North American markets.
