Matra–Simca Bagheera (M550). 1973–80 (prod. 47,802). 3-door coupé. M/R, 1294, 1442 cm³ (4 cyl. OHV). Unusual low coupé with polyester body and three-abreast seating, styled by Jean Toprieux, with further work by Jacques Nochet and Antonis Volanis. Named for the panther in The Jungle Book. Simca 315-series 1·3 at launch, 1·4 from 1975. Despite small engines, rapid due to aerodynamic body. Excellent handing. Restyling with new nose cone and bumpers in 1976. New dashboard 1978 and conventional door handles 1979. Experimental U8 engine never realized in production, with three prototypes.
