Maserati Quattroporte (AM107). 1963–9 (prod. 776 approx.). 4-door saloon. F/R, 4136, 4719 cm³ (V8 DOHC). Maserati enters the four-door market, hence the name, shown at Torino in 1963. Few entrants in the field at the time—Facel Vega Excellence, Jaguar Mark X and Lagonda Rapide among them. V8 derived from 450S racing car, but with capacity and power reduced, claimed top speed of 230 km/h. Styled by Pietro Frua, and less aggressive than sporting Maseratis; cabin somewhat austere for the market. Original engine for 1963–6 (series production commenced 1964), larger unit till 1969. Pricey—nearly double what Jaguar wanted for its Mark X, or at 6,230,000 lire, the price of 13 Fiat 500s—meant the numbers were always going to be low.
