Maserati Biturbo (Tipo AM331/Tipo AM333). 1982–91 (prod. 11,919 2·0; 6,500 approx. 2·5; 695 Spyder). 2-door coupé, 2-door SWB convertible. F/R, 1996, 2491 cm³ (V6 OHC). Maserati developed under de Tomaso ownership, aiming for a less exclusive market and hoping to expand its appeal. Styling headed by Pierangelo Andreani. First production engine with twin turbos. Initially successful, with sales dropping. Biturbo S with twin intercoolers from 1983; updates in 1985; fuel injection added from 1986–7. Bored-out 2·5 offered for export from 1983, with base engine missing intercoolers, and cast iron cylinder liners instead of aluminium. Biturbo 2500 and Biturbo ES were the two export models; fuel injection added 1987 to create the Biturbo Si 2500. Spyder with shorter wheelbase (114 mm less, to 2,400 mm) from 1984.
