Land Rover Defender. 1990–2016 (prod. n/a). 3- and 5-door UV, 2-door pick-up, 2-door LWB pick-up, 2-door extra LWB pick-up, 4-door pick-up, 4-door LWB pick-up, 3-door convertible. F/A, 2198, 2402 cm³ diesel (I4 DOHC), 2495 cm³ diesel, 2495 cm³ petrol (I4 OHV), 2494 cm³ diesel (I5 OHV), 2793 cm³ (I6 DOHC), 3528, 3947 cm³ (V8 OHV). The 90, 110 and 127 gain a name, but it’s much the same formula under the skin. Defender 90, 110 and 130 became the new designations. Rough, unrefined and rugged, lacking modern comforts—unsurprising given its roots were in the 1940s. ‘Hardtop’ panel van version also available for commercial use; not covered here. New 2·5 turbodiesel at launch of Defender name, reworked in 1994 to 300 Tdi with the same capacity. The 2·8 was a South African model. Five-cylinder turbodiesel from 1998. Further revisions in 2007, with full-width dashboard and new 2·4 Ford diesel, meeting emissions’ legisation; last major round in 2012 as 2·2 replaced 2·4 for Euro V standards. Land Rover bought some of the last ones for itself to issue a limited run of 150 V8 90 Works models, to celebrate its 70th anniversary, in 2018.
