Jeep Wrangler (YJ). 1987–95 (prod. n/a). 2-door convertible UV, 2-door UV. F/A, 2464 cm³ (I4 OHC), 3956, 4228 cm³ (I6 OHC). YJ brings long-running CJ lineage to a close, with a lighter, more fuel-efficient Jeep. Wrangler name chosen internally after being voted the most popular, landing Jeep’s owners (Renault, then Chrysler) in jeopardy with Wrangler Jeans; the case was eventually dismissed. Carryover engines from CJ, some components from Jeep Cherokee (XJ). Leaf-sprung axles. Square headlamps controversial at the time, considered too big a departure from CJ. Base, Laredo and Sahara trims at launch. Four-cylinder more powerful (by 3 hp, at 117 hp) but far less torque. New fuel-injected 4·0 six for 1991 model year, with 180 hp. Sporty Renegade from 1991, to 1994. Anti-lock brakes in 1993. YJ built through 1996 though those were still considered ’95s.
