Chrysler invests US$280 million into improving the Wrangler. Out with the leaf springs, in with coils, as with Cherokee; body’s torsional stiffness increased 100 per cent. Doors carried over, but every other panel was new, and round headlamps returned. Three-speed auto finally gave way to a four-speeder for 2003; new four-cylinder unit that year as well. Rubicon introduced 2003 with significantly uprated off-road spec. Unlimited from 2004, with 10 extra inches in wheelbase.
