Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ/ZG). 1993–8 (prod. n/a). 5-door SUV. F/R, F/A, 2499 cm³ diesel (I4 OHV), 3956 cm³ (I6 OHV), 5200, 5896 cm³ (V8 OHV). Larry Shinoda-styled mid-sized SUV begun under AMC and put into production by Chrysler. Unibody construction and more car-like on-road, but also capable off-road. Well equipped, with driver’s side airbag and ABS. Thirsty engines, and not that roomy, especially with the spare tyre in the boot. Six-cylinder OHV at launch, with 5·2 added early 1993, with upgrades to both in 1995. Facelift for 1996. Final year saw 5·9. ZG designation for Austrian-built models.
