1981 Chrysler Imperial.jpg

Imperial (YS). 1981–3 (prod. 12,385). 2-door coupé. F/R, 5210 cm³ (V8 OHV). Yet another variation on the Dodge AspenPlymouth Volaré theme, but with ideas far above the mid-sized segment Chrysler originally envisaged. Related to the J-body Chrysler Cordoba (1980–3) and Dodge Mirada. Garish, though the bustle rear end, a throwback to 1940s’ Rolls-Royces, better executed than on the Cadillac Seville, which also took inspiration from the same source for the 1980 model year. Soft, poor steering and handling—perfect for the sort of buyer that the Imperial targeted. Electronic fuel injection and digital dash among its innovations. Not officially a Chrysler, though the pentastar badge appeared. Sales dwindled year by year—the car was out of place to begin with, but new Chrysler boss Lee Iacocca said that its development was too far advanced when he arrived. Collector interest in limited-edition FS model, named for Frank Sinatra.
