1971 Imperial LeBaron Hardtop.jpg

Imperial. 1969–73 (prod. 77,980). 2- and 4-door hardtop. F/R, 440 in³ (V8 OHV). “Fuselage” model, so called because the cabin angled in along the sides like an aeroplane’s. Very large, poor fuel economy, and brake fade on 1972–3 models. Handling better than rivals’. Related to other full-size Chryslers, such as the Chrysler New Yorker, of this period. ‘Imperial by Chrysler’ badge from 1971; ’71s also had Bendix anti-lock brake option for the first time, a decade before Mercedes-Benz S-Klasse. New sheetmetal 1972, with large bumpers 1973.

Manufacturing location: USA

Marque: Imperial | Predecessor: Imperial (1967–8) | Successor: Imperial (1974–5)
