Hyundai is probably the most successful chaebol that entered car manufacturing after a government initiative on industrialization in South Korea. Original Hyundai Pony range masterminded by ex-British Leyland boss George Turnbull, using Morris Marina-type structure, simple engineering and ItalDesign bodyshells. Hyundai tended to make worthy but undistinguished cars for years, selling on cheapness, leading to automotive manufacture even in Canada for a short while. Today, Hyundai has expanded into countries such as India and Red China where various models are made, and with the i30 and new-marque Genesis, it seems to have come good in creating world-class, competitive vehicles.
