1997 Honda Civic Type R.jpg

Honda Civic (EJ/EK/EM). 1995–2001 (prod. n/a). 3- and 4-door sedan, 2-door coupé. F/F, F/A, 1396, 1493, 1590, 1834 cm³ (4 cyl. OHC), 1590 cm³ (4 cyl. DOHC). Nicknamed ‘Miracle Civic’ in the home market, growing to 4·19 m for the three-door, addressing criticisms of limited rear space. Similar fuel consumption to previous generation, but greater power. Car of the Year in Japan on launch. First Type R model in this generation from 1998, beginning a famous hot-hatch line, with DOHC VTEC and 185 hp. As before, four-door called Civic Ferio in Japan; Ballade in South Africa; two-door coupé from US. Very good ride, though handling only average, while noise and refinement lacking against competition.
