Honda Civic/Honda Ballade (ED/EE/EF). 1987–91 (prod. n/a). 3- and 4-door sedan, 5-door wagon. F/F, F/A, 1187, 1343, 1396, 1493, 1590 cm³ (I4 OHC), 1590, 1595 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Sleeker development of AG, with rounder shape and larger in most dimensions, and nicknamed ‘Grand Civic’ in Japan. Wagon still named Shuttle. Design inspired by a flounder—Japanese designers, at this time, used a lot of natural forms as their bases. Large range: sports, luxury and 4WD models. Four valves per cylinder in engines; double wishbone suspension system from Accord and Prelude adopted for this generation. Minor mid-term changes 1989, with VTEC engine following for SiR model, identifiable with bonnet bulge, and quite the hot hatch at the time. Also built in South Africa, with Ballade badge.
