Honda Civic/Honda Ballade (ED/EF/EF). 1987–91 (prod. unknown). 3- and 4-door sedan, 5-door wagon. F/F, F/A, 1187, 1343, 1396, 1493, 1590 cm³ (4 cyl. OHC), 1590, 1595 cm³ (4 cyl. DOHC). Sleeker development of AG, with rounder shape and larger in most dimensions, and nicknamed ‘Grand Civic’ in Japan. Designed around a flounder shape—Japanese designers were inspired by natural forms at this time—with same body styles as before. Wagon still named Shuttle. Large range: sports, luxury and 4WD models. Minor mid-term changes 1989, with VTEC engine following for SiR model, identifiable with bonnet bulge, and quite the hot hatch at the time. Also built in South Africa, with Ballade badge.
