Holden’s Monaro coupé was developed from the more humble HK series sedan and station wagon for 1968. The car had been lengthened to compete with the Ford Falcon and while the styling did the sedan no favours, it seemed to suit the coupé perfectly. The two-doors lasted until 1976, when the Monaro tag only appeared in marketing for the four-door GTS. The GTS itself, considered by most fans to be Monaros, lasted till 1979 until the name was revived with a coupé version of the VX Commodore in 2001, based on a study shown in 1998. The VX and VZ series were built, with exports to the Middle East (as the Chevrolet Lumina Coupé), the US (as the Pontiac GTO) and the UK (as the Vauxhall Monaro). History repeated itself: with the introduction of the VE Commodore, the sporting crown was held by a four-door successor. Holden has shown a Coupé 60 show car to commemorate its 60th anniversary, which is based on the VE—the events are somewhat similar to those of 1998.
