Taking a name from Opel for the same market sector, Holden in Australia sold Nissan Pulsar-based models in two generations to complement its three-box Gemini, fighting the Ford Laser hatchbacks. The second generation had Holden powertrains. The Astra went on hiatus from 1989 to 1996 as Holden fielded the Toyota Corolla-based Nova, but the name returned on rebadged versions of the Opel Astra.
