Hindustan Ambassador. 1957 to date (prod. 4,000,000 approx. to 2004). 4-door saloon. F/R, 1489 cm³ (4 cyl. SV), 1489 cm³ petrol, 1489 cm³ diesel (4 cyl. OHV), 1817 cm³ petrol, 1817 cm³ CNG, 1817 cm³ LPG, 1995 cm³ diesel (4 cyl. OHC). Indian version of Morris Oxford III, created after BMC shipped its old tooling to India. Sidevalve engine gave way to OHV in 1959, Mk II from 1963, Mk III from 1975. Mk IV from 1979, with diesel added. Isuzu 1·8 engine from early 1990s. Still very popular, usually favoured as ministerial transport, with taxi market accounting for many sales in some Indian cities. though as more modern transport becomes commonplace in India, the Amby is steadily disappearing. Heavy, not that well built, and dynamically well behind the times.
