1963 Hillman Imp.jpg

Hillman Imp (Apex). 1963–76 (prod. 440,032 all versions). 2-door saloon, 2-door coupé. R/R, 874 cm³ (I4 OHC). Underdeveloped rival to the Mini, compromised by poor build quality at Linwood plant and complex assembly (engine castings made at Linwood, sent 300 miles to Ryton for machining, then sent back to be put into the cars). Extremely costly for Rootes, leading to takeover by Chrysler. Revision in 1966, effectively creating Mk II. Coupé called Californian (1965–70), with lower roofline and sleeker rear window; estate, covered separately, called Hillman Husky (1967–70). Australian Hillman GT (not Imp GT) offered 1966–8, with twin carburettors and fake grille.

Manufacturing location: Linwood, Scotland

Marque: Hillman | Successor: Chrysler Sunbeam

q.v. Singer Chamois, Sunbeam Imp Sport, Sunbeam Sport, Sunbeam Stiletto
