Hillman, founded by William Hillman, began as a bicycle manufacturer in Coventry in the 1880s. The founder was a millionaire before the start of the twentieth century, and diversified into car manufacture in 1907 with Louis Coatalen. The launch model, the Hillman–Coatalen 24 hp, won that year’s Tourist Trophy. With Coatalen’s departure for Sunbeam, the company was re-registered accordingly in 1910. One of the big sellers in the prewar years was the Hillman 14 hp of 1925. In 1928, Hillman was taken over by Humber, which in turn was taken over by Rootes in 1931. The following year, the first Hillman Minx was launched, a nameplate that would remain with the company until 1970. Within Rootes, Hillman was the mainstream brand, but it began being phased out after Rootes’ takeover by Chrysler in 1967. In the mid-1970s, the Hillman brand no longer appeared on cars. Chrysler divested its French and British operations to Peugeot in the late 1970s, and the rights to the Hillman name currently reside with Peugeot.
