1947 GAZ M20.jpg

GAZ-M-20. 1946–58 (prod. 235,999). 4-door saloon. F/R, 2112 cm³ (I4 SV). Molotovets, 20th model, featuring Ponton-type body with fastback, good for a Cd as low as 0,34, claimed one source. Nicknamed Pobeda. Originally planned with a licensed Dodge six, but with postwar fuel shortages, it was decided to proceed with the same engine with two cylinders chopped off, delivering 50 PS. Independent front suspension (based on Opel Kapitän’s), hydraulic brakes, front-hinged doors, two windscreen wipers, and monocoque body. Hotchkiss rear suspension with longitudinal springs and rigid axle. Slow evolution: “three-storey” grille made way for “two-storey” one in 1947, where the lower chrome mouldings did not extend underneath the lights. First series badly made and horribly unrefined, with a production halt in 1948–9 to remedy the bugs. Second seires from 1949 with more rigid body, final drive ratio, muffler, 12 V electrics, and, from 1950, a modified gearbox. Synchro for second and third gear in 1950s. Licensed to Poland in 1951 (FSO Warsawa M20). Power increase to 52 PS in 1952. Four-wheel-drive GAZ M72 from 1955. GAZ-20V from 1955 with 55 PS and better trim. Convertible also appeared in 1955 due to steel shortage.
