Ford Thunderbird. 1970–1 (prod. 86,419). 2-door coupé, 2-door landau coupé, 4-door sedan. F/R, 390, 429 in³ (V8 OHV). Among the most garish T’birds, with jutting beak imposed on the line by Ford president Bunkie Knudsen. Same full-size platform as before and even some carryover sheetmetal (doors, rear quarters). Lower roofline meant less headroom, heavy rear quarters limited visibility. Sequential rear turn signals. Poor rear space. Still wallowy in its ride but better than competition as they softened for the 1970s. More luxurious than Oldsmobile Toronado (1971–8) and other personal–luxury cars. Lots of gadgets, which meant issues later on, and very heavy, at nearly 2½ tons. Single-digit mpg numbers for larger V8. No landau version for 1970—just the hardtop with a vinyl roof. Landau returned for 1971. Last of the four-door Birds for 1971.

Manufacturing location: Wixom, Michigan, USA

Marque: Ford | Model: Ford Thunderbird | Predecessor: Ford Thunderbird (1967–9) | Successor: Ford Thunderbird (1972–6)
