Ford Tempo Diesel.jpg

Ford Tempo (Topaz). 1984–7 (prod. 651,000 approx.). 4-door sedan, 2-door coupé. F/F, F/A, 1998 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 2301 cm³ (I4 OHV). Ford releases a third mid-sized sedan in as many years, unrelated to the other two (Ford Telstar (GC) and Ford Sierra Mk I). Far more aerodynamic and fuel-efficient than the Fairmont it replaced, and at a more logical size—part of the US downsizing effort that Ford was relatively late to the party with. Base engine a cut-down version of the old Ford Falcon’s six, with 84 hp, but HO (high-output) version from 1985 as an option with 100 hp, before that unit went down in power to 94 hp in 1987. Mild facelift, with flush headlamps, in 1986, the year a Mazda diesel unit was offered (there were few takers). Part-time four-wheel drive in 1987. Twinned with Mercury Topaz (1984–7).

Manufacturing locations: Oakville, Ontario, Canada; Claycomo, Missouri, USA

Marque: Ford | Model: Ford Tempo | Predecessor: Ford Fairmont (1978–83) | Successor: Ford Tempo Mk II
