Ford Cortina 80 Ghia.jpg

Ford Taunus/Ford Cortina (TF). 1979–93 (prod. 1,131,850 sold for all Cortina Mk IV and V; 50,000 approx. at Otosan). 2- and 4-door saloon, 2-door coupé, 5-door estate. F/R, 1294, 1593 cm³ (I4 OHV), 1593, 1993, 2299 cm³ (I4 OHC), 2294, 2994 cm³ (V6 OHV), 3273, 4089 cm³ (I6 OHV). Longest-serving Taunus, essentially a facelift of 1976–9 or Taunus II models, themselves a development of 1971 Taunus TC—hence a dated car trying to look crisp for the 1980s (even the 1990s in Turkey). Sold again in UK, Irish, South African and British Commonwealth countries as Cortina—either Cortina 1980 or Mk V, depending on sources. Built in Argentina with coupé variant 1981–4, including sporting SP5 model, all with 2·3 four. Australian production of TF series 1980–2, without direct replacement; no litre or cylinder badge on boot, just Cortina GL or Cortina with Ghia badge. Usual comments apply about poor handling as car essentially a refreshed TE with more creature comforts. New Zealand, where the car’s European origins emphasized, assembled English-made four-door saloons and estates, then Irish- (as UK CKD kits ran out) made estates into 1983. P100 bakkie offered till 1988, when finally replaced by Sierra-style model. Built by Otosan of Turkey from 1985 to 1993 (prod. 50,000 approx), with quad-headlamp models at end of decade and facelift to slanted nose in 1991.
