Old-style rear-drive engineering and Taunus engines mated to advanced-looking bodyshell. Initially polarizing—no one expected Ford to be so futuristic—the Sierra was based on the Probe III show car’s looks, and even the Porsche 928 was part of its inspiration in the shape of the side windows. As aerodynamic designs became the norm, the Sierra became more favourable to mainstream buyers. Absence of four-door saloon remedied with mid-cycle facelift (Mk II) but fast Ford fanatics will remember the range for its Cosworth models—RS, RS500 and the later 4×4. New engines from 1989 but car dated by then; replaced by Mondeo and Telstar depending on market.

Marque: Ford | Predecessor: Ford Taunus | Successors: Ford Mondeo, Ford Telstar, Ford Galaxy, Ford Versailles
