F/R, F/A, 1796, 1993 cm³ (I4 OHC), 1993 cm³ (I4 DOHC), 2394, 2792, 2933 cm³ (V6 OHV), 2499 cm³ diesel (I4 OHV), 2933 cm³ (V6 DOHC). European Car of the Year for 1986, Scorpio (tipped to be called Lugano by the media prior to launch) was an all-round executive saloon. Its hatchback was considered practical, though in the UK, it was feared that the new configuration and a new name would scare off buyers (especially after getting over the shock of the radical-looking Ford Sierra Mk I), and the old Granada name was retained. Well built with ABS across the whole range, though smaller engines (notably the 1·8) underpowered. Four-wheel-drive option at top of range. Exported to US as Merkur Scorpio for 1988 and 1989 model years, with the 2·9 V6; withdrawn due to US legislation over standard airbags.
