Ford Maverick. 1970–9 (prod. 2,586,675 incl. Mercury Comet (1971–7), plus 108,106 in Brazil). 2- and 4-door sedan. F/R, 2299 cm³ (I4 OHC), 170, 200, 250 in³, 3018 cm³ (I6 OHV), 302 in³ (V8 OHV). Two-door compact initially, fairly cramped due to styling with poor rear visibility, and 103 in wheelbase, with roots in the original Ford Falcon. Four-door added 1971, with an extra 6·9 in in the wheelbase. Brazilian model shown in 1972, for June 1973 production, but with carryover, underperforming and thirsty Willys 184 in³ (three-litre) engine, modified to fit under the bonnet. Sporting models called Grabber and Stallion among US range; GT topped Brazilian one. A Luxury Décor Option was added Stateside from 1973 and in Brazil with mid-term changes in 1976. Four-door not well received in Brazil, where two-door cars were usually favoured at the time. Generally spartan, and not as well rounded as Dodge Dart (1970–6). Four-cylinder added in 1975 in Brazil to replace maligned Willys six, though its lesser power output (99 versus 112 hp) kept buyers away; however, high-compression V8 was loved by enthusiasts, but cost kept its numbers low. US production to 1977 model year, though Maverick continued in Brazil to 1979.
