Compact car sold by Ford and developed by Mazda as part of a joint programme in the late 1970s. Mazda had better front-wheel-drive technology and was placed in charge of creating a replacement to the Ford Escort Mk II for the Asia-Pacific market. The Ford Laser was very successful through much of the 1980s, in essence a modified Mazda Familia. When the programme to replace the American Ford Escort (1981–90) was combined with that of the Laser, the car grew a little too much for Asia-Pacific tastes, and it began falling behind other rival Japanese models. The 1994 model was larger still, but included a five-door model with a unique rear end that was not shared with the Mazdas. The last generation in 1998 was conventional, sharing much with the Mazda Familia (BJ), but around this point, Ford decided to globalize its compact car line, and began selling the Focus in many Asia-Pacific markets instead.
