Ford used the Granada name on two different lines: Ford of Europe’s Granada was designed to take on the best of Germany’s executive saloons, while the US Granada was designed to take on, well, the best of Germany’s executive saloons. However, the execution differed. While the European model succeeded in its mission, the American model—“international-sized” and supposedly as good as a Mercedes 280—was heavy, thirsty and slow. The European model gained fans, even in fiction, as the transport of TV’s DI Jack Regan in The Sweeney; the US model never captured the imagination as well. Granadas were downsized in the US for the 1980s, and replaced in Europe by the Scorpio, but the name was so strong in the UK that even the original Scorpio was badged Granada.
