Ford Falcon (XL). 1962–4 (prod, 75,765). 4-door sedan, 5-door wagon. F/R, 144, 170 in³ (I6 OHV). Falcon gets a nip–tuck, with a squared-off roofline, supposedly inspired by the Ford Thunderbird (1961–3). Roofline, new grille and larger taillights helped give it a more modern appearance, and Ford emphasized the number of new parts (734). Mechanical upgrades to both sixes, with greater refinement, and a new carburettor helped with fuel economy and top speed. Suspension, the XK’s weak point, was improved with a heavier front stabilizer and bracket; there were also new gearbox, clutch and other improvements. Upscale Futura model launched; Squire wagon introduced to Australia with XL, with the faux wood panelling seen in the US, though it was less than successful.
