Ford sold two Fairmont lines. The first was an upscale version of the Australian Falcon, launched with the 1965 models. In terms of sheetmetal, there were few differences, though in later years (by the 1990s) Fairmonts tended to have noticeably different grilles. Ford Australia was consistent with the Fairmont badging, keeping the line going consistently between 1965 and early 2008, when it was absorbed into the Falcon G-series range. In the United States, Fairmont denoted a very different range, replacing the Maverick in the 1978 model year. The compact-sized (by US standards) cars were built on the then-new Fox platform, which also underpinned the Mustang from 1979 to 1993. The US Fairmont lived on till 1983 when it was renamed the LTD.
