Spacious and generally comfortable, if ride somewhat harsh and wallowy; a top selling model for Ford, beating out its competition from Jeep and GM. Control-Trac four-wheel drive could send power to front wheels if the system sensed the rear wheels slipping, and could be left on full-time for off-roading. Dual airbags from the start, in 1995. V8 for 1996. SOHC V6 added 1997. Front side airbags and reversing sensors for 1999. Revised three-door called Explorer Sport for 2001, the same year the five-door was replaced by the next-generation Explorer. Sport continued to the end of the run.
