Ford Explorer (U152). 2002–5 (prod. n/a). 5-door SUV. F/R, F/A, 3958 cm³ (V6 OHC), 4942 cm³ (V8 OHC). Ford moves away from the previous Explorer’s truck-based chassis to something purpose-built, though it was still truck-like to drive. However, handling and ride were improved thanks to independent rear suspension, and OHC engines delivered good power, albeit at the expense of fuel economy. Wheelbase up by 2 in, width by 2·5 in, aiding interior room as well as the vehicle’s stability. Third-row seating now optional. Cabin and interior materials on the dull side. Side curtain airbags and reversing sensors among safety features. See also Mercury Mountaineer (2002–5) and Lincoln Aviator (2003–5).

Manufacturing locations: Louisville, Kentucky, USA; St Louis, Missouri, USA

Marque: Ford | Model: Ford Explorer | Predecessor: Ford Explorer (UN105) | Successor: Ford Explorer (U251)
