1990 Ford Escort.jpg

Ford Escort (CE14). 1990–6 (prod. n/a). 3- and 5-door saloon, 5-door estate, 2-door convertible. F/F, 1297, 1555 cm³ (I4 OHV), 1392, 1597, 1984, 1998 cm³ petrol, 1753 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 1597, 1796, 1993 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Disappointing successor to Mk IV, with poor handling (the omission of a front anti-roll bar contributed to this on lesser models at launch in 1990) and uninspired styling. Overall shape was evolutionary and considered not a big enough step forward; Ford was criticized for letting its bean counters run the show. Some quality issues to boot. In South America, launched 1992 and built to 1996, with Volkswagen 1984 cm³ for XR3 from 1993. Mk V replaced in Europe in 1992 by Mk VI. RS Cosworth (code ACE14), with 1993 cm³ YBT engine, continued in much the same style to 1996.
