Ford Escort. 1967–74 (prod. 2,155,301). 2- and 4-door saloon, 3-door estate, 2-door panel van. F/R, 940, 1098, 1298, 1598, 1601 cm³ (I4 OHV), 1601 cm³ (I4 DOHC), 1993 cm³ (I4 OHC). Very conventional but also successful (particularly in the UK), both in the market-place and in racing. Estate from March 1968, panel van from April, and four-door from 1969. Aveley works responsible for high-performance models, under AVO (Advanced Vehicle Operations), an operation that ran till 1975. Gained its biggest competition victory with 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally, which led to Escort Mexico performance-model spin-off with 1601 cm³ and 86 bhp. RS1600 from 1970 with Cosworth BDA (Belt Drive A) engine, DOHC, with 120 bhp for road cars. Eventually took number-one spot in UK, overtaking BMC ADO 16, and credited for helping Ford recover market share in Germany. RS2000 (prod. 5,000 approx.) with Pinto engine from July 1973 (October for RHD), bridging gap between Mexico and RS1600, based on a commercial decision rather than any competition ambitions.
