Ford’s CDW27 project, costing anywhere between US$2 billion and US$6 billion depending on your source, netted four cars: Mondeo, Contour, Mystique and Cougar. The Jaguar X-type was also spun off from this platform. Someone at Ford realized that the world car concept was not dead and conceivably, it could produce something to rival vehicles such as the BMW 3er-Reihe, which was sold globally in one form. What Ford didn’t count on were its usual internal politics. While a huge hit in Europe as the Mondeo, Contour suffered from a lack of promotion in the States, and the bigwigs were told that Americans didn’t want a car of this size (all while, of course, they were buying the BMWs). Mid-term facelift in 1998 didn’t buck the trend and the Contour was deleted in North America at the turn of the century.

Marque: Ford | Predecessor: Ford Tempo | Successors: Ford Focus, Ford Fusion
