Latest revision as of 02:14, 31 October 2023Ford 17M/Ford 20M/Ford 26M (P7/II/Facelift P7). 1968–73 (prod. 567,482). 2- and 4-door saloon, 3- and 5-door estate, 2-door coupé. F/R, 1498, 1699, 1996 cm³ (V4 OHV), 1812, 1998, 2293, 2495, 2550, 2994 cm³ (V6 OHV). With the market not taking to the P7, Ford hurriedly restyled and facelifted the cars after just 10 months to fight the Opel Rekord C. The Hüftschwung waistline was gone, while the front and rear ends recalled the P5. Little change under the skin, though the stabilizer bar was revised; trailing arms on the rear axle improved the handling. Some equipment and engine upgrades. TS replaced by XL. To challenge the Opel Commodore A, Ford introduced the 26M in 1969 with the 2·6; tuned for comfort, it did not do as well as its rival, and only c. 8,000 were built. The 26M was recognizable by its twin headlamps. South African models, from CKD kits from 1969, equipped with locally made Essex V4 and V6s. European manufacture to 1971. Licensed manufacture of saloon and estate at Hyundai from 1969 to 1973 (prod. 2,406), with Korea’s first V6 (viz. the two-litre).
Marque: Ford | Predecessor: Ford 17M, 20M (P7) | Successors: Ford Consul (1972–5), Ford Granada Mk I
