Fiat Croma (Tipo 4). 1985–96 (prod. 450,000 approx.). 5-door saloon. F/F, 1585 cm³ petrol, 1929, 2499 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 1995 cm³ (I4 DOHC), 2492 cm³ (V6 DOHC). Large hatchback, part of joint-venture Tipo 4 programme that produced the Lancia Thema (1984–94), Saab 9000 and Alfa Romeo 164. Cheapest of the four, and it showed, with plastic interior materials, and not that well put together. Heavy depreciation as with most large Fiats, failing to capture the imagination for executive-class buyers. However, steering and brakes were responsive, and the lighter weight relative to the Thema helped with performance. Notable as the first production car to feature direct diesel injection. Not directly replaced, though Croma name revived for the segment in 2005.

Manufacturing location: Italy

Marque: Fiat | Model: Fiat Croma | Predecessor: Fiat Argenta | Successor: Fiat Croma (2005–11)
