Fiat 600/Neckar Jagst (Tipo 100). 1955–82 (prod. 2,695,197 at Mirafiori only; approx. 4,921,626 total incl. SEAT and Zastava). 2-door saloon, 2-door cabriolet. R/R, 633, 767, 843 cm³ (I4 OHV). Small Fiat, the first unibody car made by the company and the first with a rear-mounted engine, a layout shared with the contemporary Volkswagen 1200 (1954–60) and the Renault 4CV. Cabriolet not a full one, but a version with a roll-back fabric roof, from 1956. Unrefined and noisy but with reasonable handling; rust was an issue. Drum brakes all round. Increase in cubic capacity and power with 600D (0·77 litres) in 1960, identified externally by extra louvres on the rear engine lid. Suicide doors to 1964; larger fuel tank and new lights in 1965. Italian production to 1969. Also made under licence by NSU from 1956 to 1967, as Neckar Jagst 600 and Neckar Jagst 770 (from 1960). Very long life in Argentina, made by Fiat Concórd (later Sevel), with local production, rather than CKD kits, from 1963 to 1982 (CKD assembly from 1960 to 1962). The 600D arrived there in 1962 and was the first to be made with local bodies; 600E in 1965, when suicide doors were replaced in Argentina and a slight power boost from 32 hp to 36 hp; larger lights in 1967 and fake grille; 600F briefly made 1969–70, before 600R introduced in November 1970 with largely cosmetic changes and a more substantial interior makeover. Final iteration, 600S, from 1977, featuring the 0·84-litre engine shared with the SEAT 133, with a drop in power to 32 PS, but better acceleration and fuel economy.
