1979 FSO Polonez.jpg

FSO Polonez (137). 1978–92 (prod. 1,061,807 incl. Caro, incl. 300 3-door, excl. commercial versions). 3- and 5-door saloon, 3-door coupé. F/R, 1295, 1481, 1598 cm³ petrol, 1995 cm³ diesel (I4 OHV), 1993 cm³ petrol (I4 OHC), 1995 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Rebodied Fiat 125 (1967–81), with handsome hatchback body in the ItalDesign mould, resembling original Hyundai Pony Mk I and contemporary designs. Three hundred three-door saloons built, smaller number of turbodiesels, and a handful of coupés with lowered rooflines. Some aspects modernized but budget issues prevented adoption of modern DOHC engines, barring one version for government officials. Polonez inherited many of 125’s ills: small wheelbase, large turning circle, outdated OHV engines; however, owing to its origins as a Fiat “safety vehicle” prototype, it had crumple zones which made it safer than its basis. Very basic Popular model 1980, due to supply issues; updates in 1983. More substantial changes in 1986, with new 1·6-litre engine, and six-light body. Extra lip on rear hatch in 1987 to improve aerodynamics. Redesigned rear in 1989 with tailgate reaching to bumper level. Fuel-injected model in 1989; Ford two-litre OHC engine briefly in 1990–1; turbo 1·5 also released. Replaced by Caro in 1991; Egyptian production to 1992.
