1988 Daihatsu Charade CLS.jpg

Daihatsu Charade (G100/G101/G102/G112). 1987–93 (prod. n/a). 3-, 4- and 5-door sedan. F/F, F/A, 993 cm³ (I3 OHC), 993 cm³ (I3 DOHC), 1295 cm³ (I4 OHC). Attractive supermini, with up-to-the-minute styling by Hiroshi Aoki and Hideyuki Ueda. Design meant to appeal to young urban buyers in Japan and found favour internationally, with perhaps the exception of the US. Heavier than before, needing the addition of 1·3, though turbocharging helped, especially on the DOHC one-litre. Four-wheel drive available on hatchbacks from 1988. Sporting models known for being very potent, and had a competition history. Four-door model, dubbed Charade Social, added for the first time in 1989—while less attractive than the hatchbacks, the addition of the boot was reasonably well handled. Front-wheel drive only for four-door. Mid-term changes 1991. Formed the basis of various Tianjin and Geely models in China, where production continued into the 2010s.
